Kevin's Aquaria
BLOG AND DIARY

Welcome to my online aquaria blog and diary. Here I will share my own experience of aquaria. Maybe there will be something here that will be of help to others who are keeping fish - even if it is what to avoid!

Below you will find a directory to my blog/diary for each tank.

What's on this Page:

TANK 1 - YABBY TANK:

This tank was set up over several days, the catalyst for which was the obtaining of six Yabbies of various sizes and maturity. I had a selection of some 70 plus Yabbies and decided I would keep six of them to put into a display tank.

For some time I had wanted to have 'pets' that were not the normal run of the mill type pets such as a cat, dog or goldfish. I have been investigating various possibilities for ages and so the Yabbies provided that something 'different' I was looking for.

My set up for this tank is a 2 Foot tank with a cabinet and hood. I have an Atman 102 Filter and a 24 Inch Fluro. Light set up with the tank.

Since the Yabbies would be somewhat boring just by themselves I decided to decorate the tank with a driftwood ornament which would a place for hiding, as well as a couple of small terra cotta pots. I initially planted the tank with some Elodea, Hairgrass and Chlorophytum (all of which I have since removed).

I also included some fish which I hoped would be able to avoid the Yabbies - These included 20 China Barbs, 5 Gold Mountain Cloud Minnows, 4 Mountain Cloud Minnows and 10 Longfin Zebra Danios. Not all of these have survived and I have since added 2 Odessa Barbs into the mix. The overall effect has been quite good, with there now being a single Val plant in the back right corner of the tank.

TANK 2 - TROPICAL COMMUNITY TANK ONE:

I decided to set this tank up because I had basically recaptured an interest in keeping fish having set up the Yabby Tank above. One of the things I was keen to do was have a large collection of varying fish species, as well as to develop a hobby that would assist in relaxing me after my long work hours.

This tank is also a 2 Foot Tank which I have placed on a particularly strong 'bar' that I have. I have an Aqua-One 302F Filter 1, a 24 Inch Fluro. Light, an Aqua-One 100W Heater and a Digital Thermometer. I have also included a Mini-Stump Ornament and planted Indo Fern, Ambulia, Fox Tail and Giant Cardamine.

The initial fish added to the tank were 2 Dalmatian Mollies, 2 Silver Mollie, 2 Wagtail Platies, 2 Silver Sharks, 16 Neon Tetras, 2 Imported Male Guppies, 10 Black Widow Tetras, 6 Harlequins, 2 Male Dwarf Gouramis and 1 Large Mystery Snail. I soon added 2 Golden Gouramis, 2 more Male Dwarf Gouramis, 2 Pearl Gouramis and 4 Blue Gouramis. Many of these fish were being kept for a bigger tank I was setting up.

TANK 3 - TROPICAL SPECIES TANK ONE:

This tank I initially set up as a hospital/quarantine tank, having added 10 recently acquired Gold Swordtails to it for observation. However, I later decided to use it as a species tank - specifically for Guppies. I have again changed my mind and will probably add the Neon Tetras from the above tank in the near future, along with the 3 Sparkling Dwarf Gouramis already in the tank. The Guppies already in the tank are dying off quickly, so it will become a 2 species tank.

This tank is only an 18 Inch Tank with a Via Aqua 55W Heater and 300F-LV Int. Filter 150. I have planted some Ambulia in the tank also.

This tank I clean weekly because of the small size.

TANK 4 - BETTA TANK ONE:

This tank (bowl) was set up in a glass bowl I was given some time ago with a bit of gravel and piece of Ambulia added to it.

I initially put in a male Siamese Fighting Fish.

This tank I clean every week because of the small size.

TANK 5 - TROPICAL COMMUNITY TANK TWO:

Having set up a space for a six-foot tank I went out and purchased a 6 Foot Tank with a Stained 6 Foot Cabinet and Hood. I also installed a 6 Foot Fluro. Light, a Hailea Air Pump 5505, two 2-Way Valves, a Via Aqua 300W Heater and Underground Filter.

I have set up a variety of ornaments in the tank including several large rocks, a Knot Wood Ornament for shelter and another shelter ornament. I have also planted Hygro, Ambulia, Amazon Sword and Fox Tail plants in the tank.

Initial fish species added to the tank were the 9 Gold Swordtails, 4 Blue Gouramis, 2 Pearl Gouramis, 2 Golden Gouramis and the 2 Silver Sharks from the other tanks. I also added 2 Platinum Gouramis, 3 Honey Dwarf Gouramis, 2 Clown Loaches, 6 Congo Tetras, 4 Bronze Corydoras, 2 Peppered Corydoras, 2 Flame Gouramis, 1 Elephants Nose and 1 Bristlenose Catfish.

I intend to clean this tank every 2-3 weeks.

TANK 6 - HOSPITAL/QUARANTINE TANK ONE:

My hospital/quarantine tank is a 16 Inch Tank with a Via Aqua 55W Heater and a 300F-LV Int. Filter 150LPH.

This tank was purchased to protect my fish stock from any diseases brought in by new stock - I just haven't yet been able to use it for such a purpose (June 2005) as it is being used to raise some Platy fry at the moment.

Initially I used the tank to hold some fish I was given (1 Silver Shark, 3 Platies, 1 Dwarf Male Gourami and 2 Angel Fish - all have died except a Platy and the Gourami).

TANK 7 - TROPICAL COMMUNITY TANK THREE:

This tank I set up because I was interested in keeping some other fish species. It is a 2 Foot Tank with an Atman ATF101 Int/F Filter, a 2 Foot Fluro. Light and an Aqua-One 100W Heater. I have a Moss Log ornament for shelter in the tank and have planted Chlorophytum, Blue Stricta and Ambulia.

The tank has a Bolivian Butterfly Cichlid, 4 Golden Tiger Barbs, 6 Serpae Tetras, 2 Upside Down Catfish, a Hoplo Catfish, 2 Flying Fox Sharks, 5 Rummy Nose Tetras, 6 Glolight Tetras and 6 Glass Bloodfin Tetras.

TERRARIUM 1:

I purchased this terrarium to keep frogs. I probably won't do so for some time as I first need to get a license to do so from the NSW NPWS for $60.00.
