HOLIDAY JOURNAL:
Friday: This particular trip was not well-planned, but just a get up and go sort of one. I decided at work on the Friday to head off somewhere (since it was a long-weekend), but just where I was going I was unsure. I thought I'd head off north somewhere.
My first stop was the WWI Memorial at Karuah, since there was some family history information there to gather. I collected a few photos for the family history site there also.
After Karuah I travelled via the Lakes Way through to Buladelah, crossing Bombah Point via a punt ferry ($3.00 AU). Surprisingly this was the first time I had travelled on the Lakes Way (Mungo Brush Road) and through Myall Lakes National Park. Plenty of places close to Newcastle to visit here in future times.
North of Buladelah I travelled on the Great Lakes Way through to Forster and then back onto the highway. I travelled further north via the Pacific Highway to Taree, Kew and then Port Macquarie. At Port I stayed at the Major Innes Motel ($70.00 AU) - a budget motel. It was quite good for a night stopover really.
Saturday: After a reasonably early rise I decided to visit a few places in and around Port. Here I decided to visit Gaol Point, Allman Hill, The Court House, Historical Musuem and the cemetery at Kooloongbung Creek Nature Reserve. A visit to the museum is well worth while, being the best I've seen in eastern NSW outside of Sydney. The cemetery is worth a visit also, with many early colonial graves.
After Port I travelled further north via the highway, through Kempsey to the turnoff for the Waterfall Way. Along the way I picked up some good cheap fruit from farms along the way. I then travelled to Dorrigo and Ebor (picking up some good cheap free range eggs), with a large bushfire burning toward Guyra (visible from Ebor).
From Ebor I travelled via the Armidale-Kempsey Rd (has a number of variations), which is extremely 'bendy,' following the Macleay River. After arriving in Kempsey I booked into the Motel Kempsey ($46.00 AU).
Sunday: From Kempsey I travelled to South-West Rocks and the Arakoon State Conservation Area. Here I visited Trial Bay Gaol, Little Bay and Smoky Cape. I also did the Monument Hill and Powder Magazine Track Walks.
I then travelled back home again, via Gloucester.
