ULURU-KATA TJUTA NATIONAL PARK

INTRODUCTION:

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is a World Heritage Area, for outstanding natural values and outstanding cultural values. It was first listed in 1987 for its natural value and then in 1994 for its cultural values also.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park has seasonal opening hours and is open most days. The park is closed overnight. See the park guide or visit the park website for further details.

FEES:

There are a number of options for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park park use fees. These include the following (correct as of August 2016):

  • 3 Day Pass ($25.00 per adult, children 5 to 15 $12.50, children younger than 5 are free)
  • Annual Pass ($32.50 per adult)
  • Northern Territory Annual Vehicle Pass for Northern Territory Residents ($65.00)

ATTRACTIONS/WALKS:

Cultural Centre - Free (Daily - 7am to 6pm / Information Desk - 8am to 5pm)

It is recommended that the Cultural Centre be the first place to visit at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Here you will be introduced to the Anangu (traditional owners) culture. You can also buy the park guide here for $2.00.

Facilities at the cultural centre include toilets, picnic facilities (including gas BBQs), souvenirs, snacks and local art.

Uluru Climb

The climb up Uluru is a physically demanding walk/climb. It is often closed because of excessive heat, winds, rain, etc. The traditional owners (Anangu) ask visitors not to climb the rock.

Mala Walk

The Mala Walk begins at the Mala Carpark. The Mala Walk is an all access easy 2 km return walk to Kantju Gorge, taking about 1 hour to complete. This walk provides the opportunity to view important Anangu cultural sites, including rock art and camp sites, before reaching the magnificent Kantju Gorge.

There is a free Ranger-Guided Mala Walk most mornings (May to September 10am; October to April 8am). This experience goes for about 1.5 hours.

Kuniya Walk

The Kuniya Walk begins at the Kuniya Carpark. This is an easy all access 1 km return walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole, which takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Lungkata Walk

The Lungkata Walk can be started at either the Mala Carpark or the Kuniya Carpark. It is an easy 4 km return walk that takes about 1.5 hours to complete.

Uluru Base Walk

The Uluru Base Walk is the best way to take in all that Uluru has to offer. It is best to start this walk at the Mala Carpark. It is a moderate 10.6 km circuit walk around the base of uluru, taking in Kantju Gorge and Mutitjulu Waterhole along the way.

Liru Walk

The Liru Walk is an easy 4 km return walk from either the Cultural Centre or from the Mala Carpark. It takes about 1.5 hours to complete. Wildflowers are a highlight after rain.

Bus Sunset Viewing

This area is accessible for all until 4pm daily, after which it is accessible only for buses and coaches for sunset viewing.

Dune Walk

The Dune Walk is and easy 600 m return walk that takes about 30 minutes to complete. The walk is to the top of a sand dune that provides great views. This walk begins at the Bus Sunset Viewing area.

Car Sunset Viewing

This area provides an opportunity for great views of Uluru at sunset.

Talinguru Nyakunytjaju

This area is the newest area opened up to visitors at Uluru, providing opportunites for viewing Uluru at both sunrise and sunset. It is also the starting point for the Minymaku and Watiku Walks.

Minymaku Walk (Women's Walk)

This is an all access easy 1 km return walk that takes about 30 minutes to complete and includes access to the Minymaku Platform.

Watiku Walk (Men's Walk)

This is an all access easy 1.5 km return walk that takes about 45 minutes to complete and includes access to the Watiku Platform.

Walpa Gorge Walk

Walpa Gorge Walk is a moderate 2.6 km return walk that takes about 1 hour to complete.

Valley of the Winds

The Valley of the Winds is a difficult 7.4 km circuit walk, that includes Karu Lookout and Karingana Lookout. The walk can be shortened to just either Karu Lookout (1.1 km - moderate) or Karingana Lookout (2.7 km - difficult).

Kata Tjuta Dune Viewing

This is an easy 600 m return walk to the viewing platform and takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Kata Tjuta Sunset Viewing

This is an easy all access viewing area with picnic facilities including toilets (the only ones at Kata Tjuta).

CAMPING FACILITIES:

Camping is not allowed at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

Accommodation is available nearby at Yulara (see below).
