WATARRKA NATIONAL PARK

INTRODUCTION:

There is a free wifi point at the beginning of the Kings Creek and Kings Canyon Walks - however, in my experience it is not very good and is nearly impossible to use.

There are no fees for visiting this national park.

ATTRACTIONS/WALKS:

Kings Creek Walk

The Kings Creek Walk is an easy 2 km return walk that takes about an hour to complete. The walk follows Kings Creek.

Kings Canyon Rim Walk

The Kings Canyon Rim Walk is a 6 km circuit walk that is a moderate to difficult walk (the most difficult scetion being the climb at the beginning) and takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete. The walk includes a descent into the 'Garden of Eden.'

South Wall Return Walk

The South Wall Return Walk is a moderate to difficult 4.8 km return walk that takes about 2 hours to complete.

Kathleen Springs Walk

The Kathleen Springs Walk is an easy 2.6 km return walk that takes about 1.5 hours to complete. The walk is into Kathleen Gorge and includes relics and signs relating to both Aboriginal culture and the recent cattle industry.

The Giles Track

The Giles Track is a 2 day 22 km one-way walk between Kathleen Springs and Kings Canyon.

CAMPING FACILITIES:

There is no overnight camping allowed in Watarrka National Park. Accommodation is available at either Kings Canyon Resort or Kings Creek Station (see below).

MY VISITS:

I visited Watarrka National Park in August 2016. I stayed at the Kings Canyon Resort Campground. If staying here I would advise making sure you have everything you requre in the way of food and be sure to obtain fuel (or as much as possible) prior to arriving here, as the prices are over the top (i.e. ULP was $2.02 a litre at the resort). Some facilities are poorly maintained it would seem, so be prepared for that (as of August 2016).
