TJORITJA/WEST MACDONNELL NATIONAL PARK

INTRODUCTION:

The Tjoritja/West Macdonnell National Park stretches west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory for some 220 km. Access to the park is primarily via Larapinta and Namatjirra Drives from Alice Spring.

FEES:

There is a $12.00 Entry fee for Standley Chasm. It is well worth paying the entrance fee to visit the site.

ATTRACTIONS/WALKS:

Larapinta Trail

The Larapinta Trail is the premier walking trail through the Tjoritja/West Macdonnell National Park. This is a 223 km multi-day walk through the length of the entire national park, from the Alice Springs Telegraph Station to Mount Sounder in the far west. It is made up of 12 sections.

Simpsons Gap

Simpsons Gap is located 25 km west of Alice Springs and is a great place to start exploring the Tjoritja/West Macdonnell National Park - especially by visiting the visitor information centre on Darken Road. Free gas BBQ facilities are available at the picnic area and near the Ranger Station.

    - Ghost Gum Walk

    The Ghost Gum Walk is an easy 10 to 15 minute walk that starts at the Ranger Station, highlighting the native plants of the area.

     

    - Cassia Hill Walk

    The Cassia Hill Walk is a 1.8 km, easy to moderate return circuit that takes about an hour to complete. Great views of the surrounding ranges and Simpsons Gap can be had while on the walk.

     

    - Woodland Trail

    The Woodland Trail is a return walk of 17 km to Bond Creek.

Entry to Standley Chasm is set at $12.00 (as of August 2016) and is well worth the fee.

Ellery Creek Big Hole

Ellery Creek Bighole is a waterhole on Ellery Creek. Ellery Creek Big Hole is about 80 km west of Alice Springs, via Larapinta and Namatjira Drives. The final 2 km is via an unsealed access road, generally suitable for 2WD vehicles. There are both picnic and camping facilities at Ellery Creek.

    - Ellery Creek Walk

    The Ellery Creek Walk is an easy 5 minute stroll from the carpark to Ellery Creek Big Hole. It wheelchair accessible.

    - Dolomite Walk

    The Dolomite Walk is a 3 km circuit walk that takes a bout 1 to 1.5 hours to complete and is rated as easy to moderate.

Ormiston Gorge

There is a kiosk located at Ormiston Gorge.

    - Waterhole Walk

    The Waterhole Walk is an easy 5 minute, wheelchair accessible walk to a viewing platform overlooking Ormiston Creek and Gorge.

    - Ghost Gum Lookout Walk

    The Ghost Gum Lookout Walk is a 20 minute walk to a viewing platform high above the Ormiston Creek and Gorge. It is an easy to moderate rated walk.

    - Ghost Gum Walk

    The Ghost Gum Walk is a moderate to difficult walk that follows the Ghost Gum Lookout Walk and then beyond into the gorge itself, before returning via the creek itself.

    - Ormiston Pound Walk

    The Ormiston Pound Walk is a circuit walk that takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete. It is rated as moderate to difficult.

CAMPING FACILITIES:

There are a number of camping locations throughout Tjoritja/West Macdonnell National Park. Fees apply and are generally payable at the camping site. These include the following:

  • Standley Chasm

  • Owen Springs

  • Ellery Creek Big Hole

    There are limited camping facilities at Ellery Creek. There are gas BBQs and toilets. Camping fees apply and are payable at the site.

  • Serpentine Chalet

    Serpentine Chalet provides no facilities and is 4WD access only.

  • Ormiston Gorge

    Ormiston Gorge provides the pick of camping facilities in the Tjoritja/West Macdonnell National Park, providing showers, toilets and a kiosk during opening hours. Fees apply.

  • Glen Helen Gorge

    Commerical facilities are available at Glen Helen Resort including caravan sites and a motel.

  • Redbank Gorge

    There are basic camping facilities at Redbank Gorge.
