SUNSHINE COAST HINTERLAND GREAT WALK

INTRODUCTION:

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk is a 58km walk in the Blackall Ranges to the north of Brisbane and west of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. The walk passes through areas with gorges, waterfalls, rock pools, spectacular views of mountains and the Pacific Ocean, rainforest and eucalypt forest. The walk passes through the Kondalilla and Mapleton Falls National Parks, the Maleny and Mapleton Forest Reserves and the Delicia Road Conservation Park.

It is possible to see some 100 bird species, 30 frog species and 70 reptile species on the walk.

ATTRACTIONS/WALKS:

To complete the entire walk you need to allow 4-6 days. The walk includes a number of sections:

 

Kondalilla Falls to Baroon Pocket Dam to Flaxton Walkers' Camp (16.5 km):

This section of the walk begins at the Baroon Pocket Dam Car Park and ascends to the Baroon Lookout. The views from the lookout are magnificent. The walk then descends to Obi Obi Creek, following the creek for a time before the ascent to the lookout above Kondalilla Falls. From the falls the track continues, decsending to Picnic Creek and onto the Kondalilla Falls Picnic Park. This section of the walk takes about 7 hours to complete and includes spectacular views, bridges crossing forested streams and a boardwalk protecting rare frog habitat.

Flaxton Walkers' Camp to Ubajee Walkers' Camp (13.1 km):

This section of the walk takes about 7 hours to complete. It includes the Piccabeen Palm Forest, Mapleton Falls, Baxter Falls and the suspension bridge across Baxter Creek.

Ubajee Walkers' Camp to Thilba Thalba Walkers' Camp (13.5 km):

This section of the walk takes about 7 hours to complete. It includes Gheerulla Falls and views of the Gheerulla Valley, creek crossings, Gheerulla Bluff and various eucalypt forests.

 

Thilba Thalba Walkers' Camp to Gheerulla Falls (8.8 km):

This section of the walk takes about 4 hours to complete. It includes forest, views of the Gheerulla Valley, creek crossings and Gheerulla Falls.

 

Gheerulla Falls to Delicia Road Conservation Park (6.1 km):

This section of the walk takes about 3 hours to complete.

CAMPING FACILITIES:

There are a number of camp sites provided. These are at Thilba, Thalba, Ubajee and Flaxton. Each camping area has a toilet, water and tables. Due to the limited number of camping sites it is essential to book a camp site in advance. This can be done either by phone at 13 13 04 or at www.qld.gov.au/camping .
